You've decided to learn to crochet. Great. Now what do you actually need to buy?
The internet will tell you 47 things. Most of them you don't need yet. Here's the real list — what actually matters when you're just starting out.
The Non-Negotiables (The 4 Things You Truly Need)
1. A Crochet Hook — Size 5.0mm
Hook size matters. Too small and your stitches are hard to see. Too big and your work falls apart. For a beginner, 5.0mm (also called H/8) is the sweet spot.
You don't need a set of 20 hooks yet. Start with one good hook. Ergonomic handles help — your hand will thank you after an hour of crocheting.
2. Worsted Weight Yarn (Size 4)
Look for the "4" symbol on the yarn label. This is medium-weight yarn — not too thin, not too thick. It's the most forgiving for beginners.
Color tip: start with a light, solid color. It's much easier to see your stitches in cream or light gray than in dark navy or variegated yarn. Save the fancy colors for later.
3. Scissors
Any scissors. Seriously. You'll use them to cut yarn when you finish. That's it.
4. A Yarn Needle (Tapestry Needle)
This is a blunt needle with a large eye, used to weave in your yarn ends when you're done. It's usually sold in packs of 2-3 for a dollar or two. Don't skip this — loose ends will unravel your work.
Nice to Have (But Not Required to Start)
- Stitch markers — Small plastic clips that mark a specific stitch so you don't lose count. A piece of different-colored yarn works too.
- Row counter — A small clicker you use to track what row or round you're on. Useful once your projects get longer.
- Measuring tape — Helpful for projects that need to be a specific size.
What You Do NOT Need
Save your money on these until you actually need them:
- A full hook set (start with one)
- Fancy yarn (stick to cheap acrylic while learning)
